The association between dietary intakes of B12, folate, and choline with cognitive dysfunction in older people is not well known. We investigated the association between intake of these nutrients and cognitive dysfunction, evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination, in 681 people. The Mini-Mental State Examination and a food frequency questionnaire were used to assess cognitive function and nutrient intakes, respectively. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for cognitive dysfunction according to quartile levels of nutrient intakes were estimated by logistic regression. Compared with the lowest quartile, the odds ratios and 95% CIs for cognitive dysfunction in the second, third, and highest quartile were 0.81 (95% CI: 0.63-1.05), 0.79 (95% CI: 0.61-1.02), and 0.71 (95% CI: 0.54-0.92), respectively (p for trend = 0.01). Intakes of B12 and folate were inversely associated with cognitive dysfunction, whereas intakes of total choline, n-3 fatty acids, and n-6 fatty acids were positively associated with cognitive dysfunction. Our results suggest that intake of these nutrients may be associated with cognitive dysfunction. Further studies are needed to investigate the relationship between nutrient intake and cognitive function.
